Vance’s interest in art started in the late seventies, when he started reading James Thurber. Thurber was a brilliant humorist and member of the famed Algonquin Round Table in the first half of the 20 th century. He was also a self-taught cartoonist. His drawings were crude, but somehow that made his cartoons even funnier. This was Vance’s inspiration. He figured that if Thurber could publish cartoons that looked like that, then maybe so could he.
With no art training, Vance taught himself to draw cartoons through trial and error, at first, terribly, then eventually through more trial and error, not quite as terribly.
He began painting with acrylics and oils in 1989, transferring his warped vision onto canvas. His paintings have been shown in several exhibitions in Los Angeles, including the annual group show “Everything But The Kitchen Sync” at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in 2005.
Vance had a solo art show at the Aidan Savoy Gallery in New York City in June, 2007. (www.aidansavoygallery.com) The opening night party is Thursday, June 7, 2007. The show ran the entire month of June.
